The Fugitive: Murder Trial of

Sam Sheppard

Before O.J. Simpson, there was Sam Sheppard. This infamous murder trial captivated the nation with sensationalized media coverage, courtroom drama, and a young F. Lee Bailey as Sheppard’s attorney. But did excessive publicity deny him a fair trial? The case ultimately led to Sheppard v. Maxwell (1966) and shaped ABA Model Rule 3.6 on Trial Publicity.

Topics include:

  • The trial, media influence, and its lasting impact on the legal system
  • Supreme Court ruling on trial publicity and its ethical implications
  • How media coverage affected modern cases like Murdaugh, Trump, and Chauvin
