Representing Clients Who Experience Trauma
This program will focus on equipping attorneys with tools to effectively support victims and survivors of domestic and sexual violence. Attendees will learn to recognize common trauma responses, understand how trauma impacts communication and decision-making, and implement strategies to create a safe and supportive attorney-client relationship.

Michelle McCormick, LMSW is the Executive Director for the Kansas Coalition against Sexual and Domestic Violence (KCSDV). Michelle has worked in victim advocacy for more than 25 years, first starting as an overnight shelter advocate and continuing to serve survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking, in a variety of victim advocacy positions. Prior to coming to KCSDV, Michelle held various leadership roles in the victim services field. Michelle served as the program director at the YWCA Center for Safety and Empowerment and later was appointed as the Director of Victim Services and state victim rights coordinator for the Kansas Attorney General’s office. Michelle lives in Topeka, has served on various nonprofit and foundation boards, is an alumnus of “Topeka’s Top 20 Under 40” and is a graduate of the Leadership Greater Topeka program. Michelle has a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Emporia State University and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Kansas.
